The oldest of all AOH Divisions in the DC area, including Northern Virginia, The Commodore John Barry Division serves men of all ages who are employed in a variety of professions and trades. Its meetings are held monthly at the Irish Channel Restaurant and Pub in DC (500 H St NW) at 7pm on the first Tuesday of each month, except June through August. Because of its centralized location and status, the Commodore John Barry Division is a favorite among local Hibernians. The Division is named after Commodore John Barry, the first Flag Officer of the U.S. Navy, known as the "Father of the US Navy". |

The Ancient Order of Hibernians in America: The AOH was founded in 1836 at St. James Church in New York City. Since then it has continued to grow and prosper until it has become the largest and most influential body of men, both young and old, of IRISH lineage in the world. Today there are over 331 Divisions and 24 State boards. To be admitted, a man must be of Irish birth or descent by either parent, a practical Catholic, and at least sixteen (16) years of age. As an organization, the AOH has a mission far more important than that of a typical fraternal society. The fact that its membership is limited to those men of Catholic faith and Irish descent stamps it as different in its scope. |
